We Support Ethical Companies

Our responsible manufacturers are credited with numerous certifications, although the WRAP certification is arguably the most well-known.

WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) is a globally recognized, independent 3rd party certifying body whose mission is to promote ethical, humane and lawful conditions and practices in all manufacturing facilities.

Companies accepted into the WRAP organization go through an extensive application process in which manufacturing facilities, working environments, and worker's rights are inspected and approved by the WRAP association.

What Principles Does the WRAP Certification Include?

  • Compliance with Laws and Workplace Regulations: facilities will comply with laws and regulations in all locations where they conduct business.
  • Prohibition of Forced Labor: facilities will not use involuntary, forced or trafficked labor.
  • Prohibition of Child Labor: facilities will not hire any employee under the age of 14 or under the minimum age established by law for employment, whichever is greater, or any employee whose employment would interfere with compulsory schooling.
  • Prohibition of Harassment or Abuse: facilities will provide a work environment free of supervisory or co-worker harassment or abuse, and free of corporal punishment in any form.
  • Compensation and Benefits: facilities will pay at least the minimum total compensation required by local law, including all mandated wages, allowances & benefits.
  • Hours of Work: hours worked each day, and days worked each week, should not exceed the limitations of the country’s law. Facilities will provide at least one day off in every seven-day period, except as required to meet urgent business needs.
  • Prohibition of Discrimination: facilities will employ, pay, promote, and terminate workers on the basis of their ability to do the job, rather than on the basis of personal characteristics or beliefs.
  • Health and Safety: facilities will provide a safe and healthy work environment. Where residential housing is provided for workers, facilities will provide safe and healthy housing.
  • Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining: facilities will recognize and respect the right of employees to exercise their lawful rights of free association and collective bargaining.
  • Environment: facilities will comply with environmental rules, regulations and standards applicable to their operations, and will observe environmentally conscious practices in all locations where they operate.
  • Customs Compliance: facilities will comply with applicable customs laws, and in particular, will establish and maintain programs to comply with customs laws regarding illegal transshipment of finished products.
  • Security: facilities will maintain facility security procedures to guard against the introduction of non-manifested cargo into outbound shipments (i.e. drugs, explosives biohazards and/or other contraband).

Gildan is one of the largest domestic consumers in the U.S. They have a special program called Genuine Responsibility, whereby the cotton they use is sustainably grown and ethically harvested by proud U.S. farmers who have made significant improvements over the last 15 years, greatly improving their agricultural practices to reduce their environmental footprint.

These farmers are constantly improving their energy efficiency, optimizing water use throughout the process, reducing emissions and finding alternate sustainable energy sources, reducing waste through reuse and recycling and preserving the health of our ecosystem.

Gildan is accredited by WRAP, but also follows internationally recognized guided principles such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions and the Fair Labor Association (FLA). The FLA’s stated purpose is to protect workers' rights and improve working conditions worldwide, while WRAP’s principles establish a set of best practices commonly agreed upon in the area of social responsibility.

AWD only works with  WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) certified factories. WRAP’s “12 Principles” are based on accepted international workplace standards and regulations which encompass human resources management, health and safety, environmental practices, legal compliance including import/export and customs conformity, security standards and local laws.

How Our Suppliers Give Back

Bella Canvas

Bella Canvas recycles everything possible: fabric, plastic, bottles, paper… you name it! Their goal is to soon have a completely paper-free warehouse – and  they're close to that! They have only one trash can in each building, and employees take part in sorting and recycling all waste. They also don’t let any fabric go to waste. Anything that isn’t turned into a BELLA+CANVAS product is picked up daily and taken to different recycling centers. The fabric is then recycled into different things like tile, bottles, stuffing, upholstery – even energy!

Veganious Suppliers' Charity & Giving Back

Bella Canvas takes every opportunity to reduce CO2 emissions. Their sewing and cutting facilities are run on solar power. All the buildings at their headquarters are equipped with motion-sensor LED lighting, which use nine times less energy than traditional lights, and the buildings are insulated in a way that allows for minimal artificial heating and cooling.

Bella Canvas dyes all of their fabric in California at dye houses that use 7x less water than the average clothing manufacturer. California has some of the most strict EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulations, so by dying in California, they are adhering to the highest level of environmental compliancy.

Gildan

One of the ways Gildan gives back is through donations: they support youth education and humanitarian aid. Investing in youth education can have a transformational impact -- it builds job & life skills, and prepares new generations to contribute within their community. Gildan’s Glow Run 09 in 2016 raised over $13,000 by attendees in Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua, which was used to help thousands of children get the education that they deserve. Since 2005, Gildan's contribution to the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) represents over $1.9 million.

Gildan Glow Run Raised Thousands of Dollars For Underdeveloped Countries' Youth

Another way Gildan gives back is in improving communities, by generating social and economic impact. Gildan’s presence in a community fosters a positive impact on a variety of local businesses -- examples include: medical services; training, transportation and food service suppliers; raw materials and accessories suppliers that include dyes, buttons, zippers, boxes and office supplies. They create many business opportunities by buying the majority of their materials locally.
